Entrepreneurial competencies refer to a set of
capacities, features and understanding that enable an individual to
successfully discover opportunities. Considering the prevailing rate of
unemployment amongst the graduates which led to increased poverty and serious
social problems, the study was conducted to determine the entrepreneurial
competencies needed by students of electrical/electronics technology education
for self-employment and economic development. The study adopted descriptive
survey design and conducted in Ebonyi state. The population for the study was
200. The entire population was studied due to the small size of the population.
The instrument for data collection was structured questionnaire validated by
experts from Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki. The reliability of the
instrument was determined using cronbach alpha reliability coefficient. Data
collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviation for the research
questions, while t-test was used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of
significance. The findings of the study showed that Information and
Communication Technology skills, financial skills and managerial skills are
among the entrepreneurial competencies needed by students of
electrical/electronics technology education for self-employment and economic
development. The educational implication of the finding is that the students
should be able to have good knowledge of information and communication
technology skills, possess high financial and managerial skills. The study
therefore recommended that government should make frantic efforts to enhance
Information Communication Technology skills, financial skills and managerial
skills acquisition among the students for improved performance in their world
of work and contribute their quota in economic development.
