Climate change remains one of the most pressing global
challenges, with local communities experiencing its effects through flooding,
drought, biodiversity loss, and declining agricultural productivity. This paper
examines the role of theatre in promoting climate change awareness and
mitigation in local communities. Drawing on theatre as a participatory and
community-centered communication medium, the paper explores how dramatic
performances, storytelling, music, dance, and indigenous cultural expressions can
simplify scientific information and encourage public understanding of
environmental issues. It argues that theatre fosters dialogue, simulates
critical reflection, and motivates behavioural change by presenting
climate-related experiences in culturally relevant and emotionally engaging
ways. The paper further highlights the contribution of community theatre to
environmental education, advocacy, social mobilization, and the promotion of
sustainable practices such as afforestation, proper waste management, biodiversity
conservation, and responsible resource use. It concludes that theatre is an
effective instrument for strengthening community resilience and encouraging
collective participation in climate change mitigation. The paper recommends
stronger collaboration among theatre practitioners, environmental agencies,
educational institutions, policymakers, and community leaders to integrate
theatre into climate education and public awareness campaigns. It also
advocates increased funding for community-based theater initiatives and the
incorporation of indigenous knowledge into climate communication strategies to
enhance public participation and long-term environmental sustainability.
